NORRIS VW CAMS DESCRIPTIONS AND CHARACTERISTICS

We thought it would be helpful to give our personal insights as to what each individual cam is designed for, as well as giving the detailed lift and duration figures on the "specs" page. Practical hands-on experience and knowledge will often make or break an engine build. With this in mind, we decided to give a breakdown of our favorite cams, what they'll do, and which one should be used for what application. While it is hard to put these cams in a "box", it should be helpful in helping you to select which particular cam is right for your build. All Norris cams will work with 40HP engines, single port 1600 or dual port 1600 based builds. Lobe centers are all ground at 107 degrees for maximum power in the low RPM range, all the way up to whatever power band you choose the cam to match.

Here's an overview:



#352S - THE "MILEAGE MAKER" - This cam was designed for stock engines. The cam design adds pep to any stock VW engine. It will add smooth performance and drivability without sacrificing any mileage. This is the perfect cam for your stock build. Idles smooth. Instant throttle response. Split lifts between intake and exhaust lobes. Engle does not make a similar cam. This cam can be used with stock (1.1:1) rockers or any ratio: 1.25, 1.4 shown. Super smooth to 5000 RPM's.



#329S - THE "BUS CAM", MILD STREET CAM, OFF ROAD CAM
- This cam was originally designed for bus engines, way back in the day. It helped moved heavy cars with low displacement engines. The super torque proved great for mild performance engines on standard VW's as well, and is also well suited for heavy off-road cars with smaller motors. We've found that this is a great cam for small displacement engines: 1641cc, 1679cc, 1776cc, etc., with mostly stock components. It's not hard on valvetrain components and can It pulls hard and still idles very smoothly, even down at 800-900 RPM's. You might compare it to an Engle 100 cam. Unlike the 100, it can be used with stock (1.1) ratio rockers, or it be used with 1.25 or even 1.4 ratio rockers. Using larger rockers will allow you extend your powerband, add horsepower, and allow you to fine tune your engine dynamics without having to split the case and change your cam again if you decide to give it a little extra zing later. With the right combo, these will run well up to about 6200 RPM's. Will work great with standard valve springs for stock rockers. Recommend HD single springs for 1.25 or 1.4 rockers. Very easy on lifter bores. This cam is a great choice for an engine built for longevity.



#330S - THE "ALL-AROUND" PERFORMANCE CAM - This cam is the very favorite of many "Old School" builders. Talk to anyone who's been building performance motors for 30 or 40 years, and this cam will come up in the conversation. It works great for stock sized engines. It works great for larger ones. It's the best cam for mid performance engines on light or heavy cars. We've even drag raced this particular cam on our Kaddie Shack race car and won our class. It has great low end grunt for heavy cars, and still pulls up to 6500 RPM's with the right components. Idle is pretty smooth. Works great with stock heads, big valved heads, or even ported heads. Like the #329S, it can be used with stock rockers, or it can be used with 1.25's or 1.4's to fine tune your power band to match your engine without splitting the case to do it. This can be compared to the Engle 110, but is superior in many ways. Will work great with standard valve springs for stock rockers. Recommend HD single springs for 1.25 or 1.4 rockers. Very easy on lifter bores. This cam is another great choice for an engine built for longevity. We've had the same 330S cam running in muliple engines since 1980.



#336S - THE "STREET/STRIP" PERFORMANCE CAM - This cam is a great choice for lightweight cars that want to go fast. It will work in a variety of applications for a big punch. We especially like this cam in medium displacement motors (1835cc - 2110cc). We've run it on our 1968cc and it ran high 13's in the 1/4 mile at 95 MPH. It purrs like a kitten, yet roars like a lion! Like its little brother, it can be used with 1.1:1, 1.25:1, or 1.4:1 ratio rockers. It works best with engines with performance modifications such as ported heads, counterweighted crank, etc. With the right combo, it can make power up to 7200 RPM's. It's nice and smooth around the street, yet really packs a punch at the track. We've used this cam to win drag races, and yet drove the car 400 miles home after we were done. Idle speed needs to be set a little higher than stock.



#355S - THE "SUPER TORQUER" CAM - This cam is a great choice for cars that want to go fast, especially when equipped with a stroker crankshaft of 78mm or larger. It pulls very hard from the low end of the power band, pulling all the way up to about 7200 RPM's with the right heads and carburetion combo. We've noticed this cam to make a little less overall top-end horsepower than other comparative cams, but the track time is faster, as torque is applied more evenly throughout the power band. It will work in a variety of applications for a big punch. We especially like this cam for street/strip combos in lightweight cars. We've run it on a variety of displacements up to 2332cc's. It can be used with 1.1:1, 1.25:1, or 1.4:1 ratio rockers, but 1.25's or 1.4's are generally recommended. Ported heads are a must, as are counterweighted crank, etc. It's nice and smooth around the street, yet really packs a punch at the track when set up properly.



#407S - THE "MID-PERFORMANCE STREET/OFF ROAD" CAM - This cam is another favorite of many "Old School" builders. This cam is designed to be used with 1.1:1 stock ratio rockers, but can also be used with 1.25:1 rockers for even more lift. We recommend solid shaft improvements on the rockers, as well as HD single springs. If revving past 5500 is desired, we recommend dual springs and/or shimming the HD single springs to match. Chromoly or Super Duty Aluminum pushrods are a good idea, as well. This is a high lift, fast ramp cam, which makes gets the valve up quick, and keeps it there longer. This creates big power and a great power band. Idle will be a little lumpier than stock, so we recommend setting idle at a minimum of 1000 RPM's. Works best with big valved heads, and even better with ported ones. Displacements of 1776cc or larger are recommended. Works fantastic with 1835cc or 1914cc with the right components, and even better with 1904cc or 2054cc. This is still considered a "mid-performance" cam, having smooth driving characteristics. Great to beat the rice-burners at the drag strip, run in your off road car, or beat your buddy to the next light. Buckle up and prepare for sprited driving. It also works great in large displacement bus engines where torque is needed in the low end, and high revs aren't.



#408S - THE "STROKER PERFORMANCE" CAM - This cam is another favorite of many "Old School" builders wanting to make big power from stroker motors. It's the "Big Brother" to the 407S, with an additional 20 degrees of duration. This cam is designed to be used with 1.1:1 stock ratio rockers, but can also be used with 1.25:1 rockers for even more lift. We recommend solid shaft improvements on the rockers, as well as dual springs, compression 9:1 or greater, ported heads, and a crankshaft stroke of at least 76mm to take full advantage of this cam. Chromoly or Super Heavy Duty Aluminum pushrods are necessary. This cam creates big power and a great, drivable power band. Idle will be a little lumper than stock, so we recommend setting idle at a minimum of 1100 RPM's. This is our #1 choice for stroker builds for the street, large bus motors, off-road strokers. Smooth power band when used accordingly. Revs to 7200 RPM with the right combo.




#V425S - THE "DESERT" CAM
- This cam was initially designed for desert racing back in the early days of the Score off-road races. These cars were run hard at variable RPM's, and you were required to either win or break. Soon thereafter, it was discovered that these cams work very well on the street, and on the strip. This cam is not for a daily driver, it is for more of a play car that is driven on occasion, but driven hard. It's a bit tougher on valve train components with its super-fast ramp and high lift, even faster than the 407S. HD springs are required. Dual springs are preferred. Chromoly pushrods or Super Duty Aluminum ones are suggested. Ported and big valved heads will work best. 1835cc and larger displacement recommended. Idle will be lumpier than stock. This cam is the next step up from the 407S. It is similar to the Engle VZ series cams. Short duration, high lift makes a super smooth power band. Works great for varying RPM's up to 6500+ with the right components.





#V431S - THE "BIG DESERT" CAM
- This cam was initially designed for desert racing back in the early days of the Score off-road races, and is the "Big Brother" of the V425S. These cars were run hard at variable RPM's, and you were required to either win or break. Soon thereafter, it was discovered that these cams work very well on the street, and on the strip. This cam is not for a daily driver, it is for more of a play car that is driven on occasion, but driven hard. It's a bit tougher on valve train components with its super-fast ramp and high lift, even faster than the V425S. Dual springs are required. Chromoly pushrods or Super Duty Aluminum ones are suggested. Ported and big valved heads will work best. 1835cc and larger displacement recommended. Idle will be lumpier than stock. It is similar to the Engle VZ series cams. Short duration, high lift makes a super smooth power band. Works great for varying RPM's up to 6500+ with the right components.
